Me-Made-June '11: and another thing...

Why is it that one shitty comment, even in a sea of positive ones, stands out and effects us more than the rest? Is it because being unpleasant is such an incongruous act in this very supportive and positive community of ours? Or maybe there are others which also share those negative views but don’t actually go as far as to leave them as comments? Whatever, I’m not going to waste a chunk of my Saturday dwelling on it too much. But I will say that my Me-Made/Self-Stitched challenges have garnered a few negative comments since their conception, in fact I received one the other day which I thought may be interesting to look at.

‘Samantha’ (who left no link) said 'This month not many bloggers participated in the me made june event. I think they are all over this concept and time for something new I guess'. Now the sheer number of comments on the same post proffering an opposing view of Me-Made-June ‘11 et al, should be reason enough to gloss over her’s, yet I naturally found myself internally responding to her’s the loudest. So let’s have a look at the two points she makes. The first is that, in her opinion, not as many bloggers have participated in MMJune ’11 than previous challenges. Well, let’s pretend that the number of participants actually matters in anyway to the value of the challenge; if we look at the number of participants signed up and contributing to this recent challenge’s Flickr group, we will see that more people were actually part of this than both the proceeding Me-Made-March ‘11 AND Me-Made-May '10. But Me-Made-June ‘11 etc, are not some sort of numbers game, like how many friends you have on facebook or something. If only a handful of participants took part and found it a fun and useful experience, then it can be viewed as a firm success in my book.

The second point she makes, it that people are ‘over this concept’. Once again, the numbers would tell the opposite. If by ‘over this concept’ she means that it is no longer new, then yes of course that is true. I fail to see that the newness or otherwise of the idea has any impact on it’s worth in anyway. I would also like to point out that the majority of participants of this most recent challenge had either taken part previously OR had followed one or more previous challenges as other stitchers participated, which would indicate to me that people are not actually ‘over the concept’.

I am only bothering to address this thoroughly irrelevant comment of ‘Samantha’s’ because it reminded me of one particularly unpleasant and, to my mind, unjust comment I received last year about Me-Made-May '10, which really upset me. I let that one dwell on my mind for a while, and in the end I deleted it because I didn’t like having it hanging around in black and white for me to revisit whenever I was feeling masochistic. Well, I have since come to regret not flagging up that comment and answering it, not that most ‘hit and run' commenters ever tend to return to get involved in a balanced debate. But by deleting it I kind of muffled myself and I never got to vent my counter-arguements. Now, I’m not getting involved in a whole freedom of speech debate, but I am a firm believer in the phrase ‘If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it’. Or say it on your own blog if you really feel it’s relevant and needs voicing.

Ok, done. Unpleasant comment addressed. I now want to talk about a couple of the lovely aspects I experienced by participating in Me-Made-June ‘11 that I didn’t specifically talk about in my last post. The first is the ability to meet and ’hang with’ the other participants, particularly through the Flickr group. If time/money/relative distance could be overcome, I’d love to meet all the challenge’s participants in the flesh. A few examples: I’d love to go for a coffee with Hilary in Fargo and chat 'subconscious-association outfit-making’ and see if the locals really do say ‘Yah’ like the characters do in the film; I’d love to go novelty-print fabric shopping with Stacy, and hopefully locate a Catlanta Cat en route; I’d love to throw on a summer frock and go and see Cecili and talk tattoos and teaching English, and pray she’d let me have a peak at her stash; to name but a few experiences I lament I am unable to have. Neither is there time in my day to hold down a full-time job and relationship AND follow every single creative person’s blog that I come across. But if it wasn’t for these challenges, I possibly wouldn’t even know about most of these cool, funny, insightful, intelligent and inspiring women who chose to particpate at all, let alone get to know them on some level and share some banter.

The other benefit I’ve experienced in Me-Made-June ’11 that I’ve found to be more pronounced than through previous challenges, and that is one of body/self-image. Now, unfortunately like most women I’d say, I have a pretty distorted and constantly shifting view of my body and appearance. Some days I think I look pretty good, other days, to be frank, I detest what I see (or think I see). In fact, my view can swing back and forth from these extremes within hours, let alone days. I know that it’s all the result of a construct of media manipulation of female imagery and advertising etc., and I’d like to think I have a more balanced view than many, but it still effects me and I do waste precious brain space thinking about what I look like and how I am subsequently viewed. Since turning 30 in many ways I have become much more confident and relaxed, but I can also sense myself and my life moving from one distinct period towards another unknown one. And that’s pretty unsettling. My face is changing, my body is changing, what is expected of me is changing, and although I’d say I’ve answered (or chosen not to answer) a lot of the issues that seem to arise, my self-perception is still influx. Seeing a whole month’s worth of images of myself, as someone else sees me has actually calmed me down a bit and stopped my imagination running out of control. A solid record of a month of my life, a month of myself.

Me-Made-June '11: Days 29 & 30. The end.

So, lovely peops, here we are. The final installment in the latest Me-Made challenge. I don't really have any shocking revelations to divulge, I'm afraid. Unless you view 'could do with a couple more cardi's and maybe another jacket' as shocking. Maybe you do.

Day 29:

  • Denim high-waisted shorts

  • Black cotton Port Elizabeth top

  • Pants

  • Saint cardi worn to and from work
It's funny how these shorts were intended to be all vintagey pin-up in style, yet combined with this looser slightly cropped top, the whole thing has a more contemporary vibe. I liked wearing this outfit, but I kind of felt in camoflage, like I was pretending to be someone else. I don't like a lot of contemporary styles at the moment (I hate those pleated front trousers that taper at the ankle, and those baggy silk blouses with the hem line that shorter at the front, for example), and I feel like I'm not being myself in this. However, I'm now a firm convert to the high-waisted shorts, but must remember that high-waisted shorts are for life, not just for Me-Made-June.

Day 30:

  • New Frida Kahlo dress

  • Refashioned cardi

  • Pants
Ha! Surprise! A mental new garment in which to celebrate the end of an explorative month. This is the first wearing of this dress, and I'll formally 'introduce' you soon in its own especially devoted blog post. It's actually really comfy, but I did have to explain to my boss why I was wearing a bizarre child's party dress to work this morning.

So. What now? Now I'm going to go back and have a good look through my self-stitched outfits and garments worn this month and try to figure out what suited me and where I need some work. I made no attempt towards any kind of wardrobe planning, preferring instead to sew at whim, but I do feel some lessons in silhouette and layering are in order.

If you have participated in MMJune '11, have you learnt anything this month? If you are a repeat participator, have you learnt anything new from previous challenges? Has participating in this challenge brought up anything you didn't expect? What turned out to be your favourite garment/outfit and why? Are there any garments you'll ditch after this challenge? Anything that has rose in your estimations? And on a selfish note, which of my outifts/garments that I rocked this month do you feel looked the best? Knowledge is power, afterall!

And onto the inevitable question: will there be another? Ummm, YEP!!!! Of course! I know that for participants of Me-Made-June '11, the thought of taking and uploading another month of documentation photos is probably as appealing as stepping in cat poo right now, but each of these me-made challenges really does have its own flavour, revelations and fun, so hopefully some of you will join myself and any newbies in September for (can you guess?!): Self-Stitched-September '11!!!!!! Thank you and goodnight.

Me-Made-June '11: Days 25, 26, 27 & 28

Don't worry peops, this is the penultimate view into my daily wears this month. I have to say that seeing myself in my home-mades as others would is a very useful exercise, seeing what looks good and what, umm, doesn't. Anyways, let's crack on..

Day 25:

This was my chosen outfit for the fantastic meetup this weekend. Seeing as it was a celebration I wanted to wear something a little more special than what I would usually wear to wander around the shops. I'm glad this photo features my yellow jacket pretty prominantly, as it's done me proud this month but hasn't received the photographic recognition it deserves.

Day 26:

  • Denim trousers
  • Cotton top
  • Pants
  • Denim skirt later on
Damn, it was unexpectedly hot on Day 26! You've caught me trying on bras in M&S! I've just realised I haven't been in a changing room since I left my fashion trend research job in Barcelona last July! That's nearly a year! This photo reminds me of all those documentation paps I took in changing rooms for the very first me-made challenge that I undertook solo back in March 2010.

Day 27:

  • 50's day dress
  • Pants
  • Yellow jacket
    • Ha! Look, you can tell when it's warmer because my list of me-mades for the day is radically shorter! Now, as I mentioned in the original post about this dress, it's pretty granny-esque. As it turns out, along with the Bolognese, my mum hates this dress! Which I can totally understand. When she was developing her sense of style and beginning to use fashion as a form of self-expression in the mid-60's, she was rocking sharp mod-styles. She and her mates would be using those styles to move away from the fashions of the previous era, that of their parents, which this dress falls into. Anyways, it's super-comfy on a warm day. The blousiness maybe questionable stylistically, but it is a joy to wear when the English summer shows it's face.

      Day 28:

      • Wax fabric Anda dress
      • Pants
      • Yellow jacket
Do you remember this wax fabric Anda dress? Of course you don't! I made it approximately 3 million years ago, around the neolithic period (Creationists don't believe this dress even exists). A long time before I even started this blog, though it did get an airing during Me-Made-May 2010. It recently appeared in a bag of stuff I'd had stashed at my folks' house. I'd virtually lived in this dress in Barcelona on hot days when I still needed to look semi-decent, so I guess I was happy to have it out of sight for a while.

If you have been participating in MMJune '11, have you found yourself revisiting older creations as part of this challenge? How did it feel to be 'reunited' again?

      Me-Made-June '11: Days 22, 23 & 24

I've just become aware that there actually aren't that many days left in this challenge now. So if these documentation posts annoy or exhaust you, hang in there, not long til normal transmission is resumed. Personally, I feel I've kept on top of my documentation better this time round than my previous challenges. I must say a relatively stable internet connection has helped with that somewhat. But I also have a back log of things I want to post about: garments I've created and discussions I want to further, so in a way I'll also be pleased too when I have some brain and blog space to tackle those.

      Day 22:

In the spirit of realising I don't have many days of this challenge left, I thought it time to crank out my new anchor skirt. As I predicted, I think it looks great with the navy blouse (which also features an anchor motif along the white trim detail). However, I failed to predict how difficult this skirt would be to walk to and from work in, OR how tight it would feel when sitting down. I don't care, I love this skirt so hard, I'll lose weight for it if I have to.

      Day 23:

      • Refashioned jumper
      • Denim sailor trousers
      • Vest
      • Pants
      • Coat to and from work
After the constriction of the previous day, I decided to rock a more comfortable outfit on Day 23. However, upon reflection I feel the colours of the jumper and trousers are too similar. If you squint your eyes, it looks slightly like I'm wearing some bizarre all-in-one/jumpsuit! Can you imagine, a denim jumpsuit?! Or a knit jumpsuit?! Which would be worse?

      Day 24:

      • Sencha blouse
      • Navy capri pants
      • Refashioned cardi
      • Pants
      • Yellow jacket to and from work
This photo is in accordance with Claudine's mini-photo challenge for Friday 24th, which is to have your photo taken with an animal. I am, of course, lucky enough to have a colleague that fits neatly into that classification. Otherwise I'd have to hang around outside and risk getting close to another pesky seagull or something!

Oh, I've just realised you haven't 'met' these capri pants before. I made them a few months ago when it was way too cold to actually wear them. The pattern is from a Burda magazine from a couple of years ago, but I borrowed it from the lovely Michelle so can't be sure of which issue I'm afraid. They are really simple, a shaped waist band and side zip. I used some navy twill blend that has some stretch in it, which was a good call. However, to my surprise when I first tried them on, they are actually pretty high waisted. Therefore, they are not the most comfortable things after lunch, but deal-with-able, unlike the lovely red swing trousers. I was planning on making another pair in red to go with my Corazones blouse and this Sencha blouse I'm wearing today, I even have some (non-stretch) red twill sitting in my stash that are just the right shade. But these navy ones are not comfortable enough, nor get worn frequently enough yet, to justify making another pair at this time. I may still do so though. Or maybe I'll use that red twill for a 'Poetry and Clothing' project garment later in the year. Blah blah blahhhhh, would you listen to me wittering on!

It's the Me-Made-June '11 celebration Brighton Meetup tomorrow, woo hoo!!!!!!!!! Have a great weekend peops xxx

      Me-Made-June '11: Days 19, 20 & 21

With no further ado, I'll get on with documenting MMJ '11.

      Day 20:

      • Black sailor trousers
      • Stripey T-shirt
      • Refashioned cardi
      • Pants
      • Yellow jacket when I went out
Not the most exciting outfit in my repertoire, but not bad for a Sunday avec un petit hangover. At least I managed to avoid the addition of seagull poo!

      Day 20:

      • Red Beignet skirt
      • Stripe T-shirt
      • Refashioned jumper
      • Pants
      • Yellow jacket to and from work
Now, I'm not convinved the proportions of these garments work particularly well together, but you don't know these things 'til you try, eh? I do love wearing nautical colours though. You may have noticed that already.

      Day 21:

      • Black sailor trousers
      • Bustier line T-shirt I made the previous day for this tutorial
      • Saint cardigan
      • Pants
      • Yellow jacket to and from work
Now, if I'm honest, when I was making that T-shirt, I was planning on giving it to someone, seeing as I already had a similar version. But when I tried it on to check the fit, it looked really nice to I decided to keep it! I can always make more....

      Me-Made-June '11: Days 16, 17 & 18 PLUS The Red Swing Trousers Saga

Howdy peops, I'm guessing that right now you're wondering what I've been wearing over the last few days. No? Oh, I show you anyway...

      Day 16:

      • Denim sailor trousers
      • Stripey Sencha blouse
      • Refashioned cardi
      • Pants
      • Jacket worn to and from work
Ok, I like these trousers better with a top that isn't tucked in like this.

      Day 17:

      • Lace embellished dress

      • Saint cardi (not worn in this pic so don't think your eyes are going funny)
      • Pants
      • Jacket to and from work
      • Patty's shirt
The reason for the silly shot is Claudine's mini-photo challenge in the MMJune '11 Flickr group. Friday's challenge was to have your photo taken with a loved one, so we channelled a faux-Victorian vibe for ours!

      Day 18:

      • Red linen swing trousers
      • Bustier line T-shirt
      • Saint cardigan
      • Pants

      • Coat worn when I hit the streets
So I have yet had the opportunity to introduce these new trousers of mine. I'll explain.... During the last Brighton sewing meetup, I met the lovely Handmade Jane, who was rocking a stunning hand-made outfit including the gorgeous wide-legged navy trousers that I'd previously covetted over on her blog. The looked equally as fantastic in real life. As we were wandering round Brighton having a natter, I remarked that they would look awesome in red linen for summer, and less than half an hour later Jane and I were with the rest of those lovely ladies in Ditto fabrics staring at some stunning deep red linen blend. Jane very sweetly offered to lend me the pattern, the fabric got purchased, and a plan was born.

I must admit, I felt a little guilty about buying new fabric, but the 2m I needed is the only fabric I've bought so far this year. Jane must have popped the pattern (Simplicity 3688, a 1940's reprint) virtually the second she got home, bless her, because it arrived at work very soon after. Wide 40's-style swing trousers had been in my mind recently, and thought that these would fit pretty well into my vaguely retro-tinged wardrobe. They went together very quickly and the linen/cotton blend seems to have been a good choice.

Apparantly the wind decided you couldn't see them properly!:

But there's a 'but'. Well, a couple of 'buts' actually. One being that I'm not sure this type of high waist suits me. I'm short-waisted, meaning I have bugger-all space between my natural waist (the smallest part of my mid-section) and my bust. I like rocking a high-waisted look, but I don't find this 'high waist with a waistband' variety to be very flattering. They do nothing to flatten my belly, unlike my high-waisted shorts, in fact I think they kind of emphasise it (I chose the most flattering of shots taken, if you don't believe me, I have photographic evidence to back up my statement!).

The second 'but' is one of comfort. They fit perfectly in the morning, AKA, before lunch. Now, I don't know about you, but when I eat when my stomach is in anyway contricted my a waistband or belt, I get really bloated and feel uncomfortable for the rest of the day, until I can get home and put my jam-jam bottoms (pyjama trousers) on. In fact, the first time I tried out a day in these trousers, I got so uncomfortable after eating an epic lunch, that the button literally popped off on my way home! It's taken me a good six years to finally acknowledge the whole bloating phenomena, and I just don't want to feel uncomfortable any more. So, as much as it pains me, because pre-lunch they reallly do look great, I'm going to give these trousers to a better home, to someone with a slightly smaller waist than me and no belly to speak of, who I'm pretty convinced with adore these. If you love something, set it free, right?!

Oh, and on my way home from town, I was the victim of a seagull-poo attack, so had to get changed (into me-mades: black sailor trousers, black jersey top and refashioned cardi) to go and play poker in the evening:

      What a day!

      Me-Made-June '11: Days 13, 14 & 15: Plus Brighton Meetup INFO!!!

Ok, let's get the house keeping out of the way first. For those who are lucky enough to be in the vicinity of Southern England on June 25th, I'm organising a meetup of sewers to celebrate Me-Made-June '11 in Brighton. This event will involve wandering about one of, let's face it, the best places in the UK for creative-minded peops: absorbing inspiration, fabric and notions at will, then retiring to sit, natter and imbibe, and even partcipate in a purely voluntary swap of unwanted pieces of fabric. In short, it's going to be amazing. So amazing in fact, that many of those who flagged up their interest in the comments section of that original announcement post failed to include the crucial piece of info: their email addresses. Not everyone's blogger account automatically provides an email address, so whereas I've been able to hunt down some, others evade me. I've sent out an email with further details about the meetup, so if you already declared your interest but haven't received an email from me, OR you missed the initial announcement and quite fancy attending having read this post, y'all need to provide me with your email address. You can leave it in this comments section, or the comments section of the original post, or you can email me directly at the email address you can see in my profile on the right hand side at the top of this page. Looking forward to seeing everyone in less than two weeks!

Onwards with the ongoing documentation of my participation in Me-Made-June '11.

      Day 13:

      • Ruffle-front jumper
      • Massive flower miniskirt
      • Vest
      • Pants
      • Coat
Yes. I am wearing a knit jumper AND vest in June. No. I'm not happy about it. But Yes. I do still love this skirt.

      Day 14:

      • Stripey T-shirt
      • Denim sailor trousers
      • Pants
      • Saint cardigan on the way to work
I don't want to fall so easily into the British stereotype of always going on about the weather, but by contrast to chilly, drizzly Day 13, Day 14 was seriously hot! That's the schizo weather we are dealing with here. It makes it very tricky to plan outfits, let me tell you. I'm not complaining, mind, it felt lovely to be wearing so few layers. Umm, upon reflection I'm thinking these trousers make me look pretty wide round the mid-section. Of course, it could be that I am just pretty wide round the mid-section, but if that is true, these trousers are doing nothing to disguise the fact. Maybe I need a lower waistline? A darker colour (do my black version of these trousers create the same effect)? Or a narrower leg fit? Any ideas?

      Day 15:

      • Black jersey top
      • Denim high-waisted shorts
      • Pants
      • Coat
You're going to be really proud of me: I did it! I spent a day in my other pair of high-waisted shorts! Remember how I was all going on about how I felt really uncomfortable and self-conscious in the shorts I'd been making, and that I'd decided to challenge myself to wear both pairs for a whole day each during this month? Well, tick! Done!

I have to say, I LOVE these shorts now! Thanks everyone who offered advice and your own thoughts on short-wearing in that initial 'Thoughts on Shorts' post. I have to say, for me I think the limit of my comfort-zone is with the tights wearing. I feel good in these shorts with opaque tights on, but I don't think I'd enjoy wearing them with flesh-coloured tights or bare legs. Maybe that'll change in the future, but I feel like major progress has been made in this field, so I'm happy with that right now.

I also must admit, I only put the belt on for the photo (taken at lunch time) and then again to go out after work (along with some red lipstick, FYI). The belt is too tight to wear all day, who can work in what is effectively a corset?!

      Me-Made-June '11: Days 10, 11 & 12 (plus a cheat for charity!)

Helloooooo. Hope you had a great weekend. This post proves I spent mine in hand-made wares, mostly!

      Day 10:

      • Black sailor trousers
      • Sacred heart blouse
      • Refashioned cardi
      • Pants
      • Coat

In case you were wondering, I was trying to perfect a jump-photo, like the girls on America's Next Top Model, as they always get commended for 'thinking outside the box' and attempting a jump in their shoots. It's frikkin' hard though, maybe I'll nail it by the end of the month.

      Day 11:

      • Black sailor trousers
      • Black stretch top
      • Refashioned cardi
      • Pants
      • Coat

I travelled to my old home town on Day 10 to spend the weekend with my fam and friends, so you'll no doubt detect a lack of variation in outfits for these three days. However, I was able to answer the perennial question: can one successfully rock hand-made garms to a cider and perry festival somewhere in the middle of the Essex countryside? YES! In case you were in any doubt.

      Day 12 (morning):

      • No me-mades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you even believe it?! The very creator of Me-Made-June '11 has cheated her own challenge rules and is wearing not a stitch of her own creation! And she appears to be proud of herself! Well, me and my lovely mummy there did a 5K sponsored run called Race for Life, for the charity Cancer Research UK, along with about 7000 other women.

In fact, seeing as I'm in a confessional mood, I'll admit to having regularly donned non-me-made sportswear throughout this month. I could have knocked up a me-made T-shirt to run in, and I doubt a pair of sweat trousers wouldn't be beyond my abilities, but I really don't see the point in making me-made sportswear just for the sake of this challenge when I already own a drawer full of old sportswear that I can through on for an hour to sweat in. All my sportswear was either bought by myself years ago or given to me fairly recently as hand-me-downs. When these existing items eventually become unwearable, unless my best mate donates me even more of her unwanted sporty garms, I'll happily replace them with me-made versions, particularly if I can find suitable fabric secondhand. That's really how I hope most challenge-participants are approaching Me-Made-June '11: making themselves items that will be useful to them, that maybe fill a 'wardrobe gap', rather than making essentially multiples of things they already own which serve the exact same function, years before that original is due to perish. As awesome as rocking me-made garments is, I can't see making garments which function identically as things you already own as a particularly sustainable or useful tack.

      Day 12 (afternoon):

      • Black sailor trousers
      • Long-sleeved leopard top
      • Refashioned cardi
      • Pants
      • Coat

I'm back in me-mades. Hope you haven't lost faith in me!

      Thursday, 9 June 2011

      Me-Made-June '11: Days 7, 8 & 9

Hi peops, time for more proof that I've been sticking to my word and fulfilling my pledge to wear only me-made garms for the duration of the month.

      Day 7:

That's a pretty nautical outfit I'm rocking there! I approve. I'd like to think that my furry colleague, Piglet, also approved, but I doubt he had much of an opinion on the matter considering the subject in question didn't involve him eating someone's sandwiches or running around the park:

      Day 8:

I'll be honest with you, I'm basically falling in love with this skirt. The fabric is just too awesome. Every time I caught a glimpse of it in the mirror, it made me smile. It feels really nice to wear as well. The impulse-project mustard T-shirt I recently made does go nicely with it, as I'd hoped, but it was too damn chilly in the studio to wear my cardi open so you'll just have to trust me until a warmer day graces us.

      Day 9:

      • Navy sateen skirt
      • Remade jumper
      • Vest
      • Pants
      • Leopard coat to and from work
Yes, more unseasonal knitwear. Oh well, I have to remind myself I didn't move from Spain to the UK for the weather. I love this skirt though. I forget in between me-made challenges how much I love this skirt. The sateen has some stretch in it, and it's washed into a really soft texture so it feels so nice to wear. I preferred wearing it when I had red tights to rock with it, but they died and I've failed to replace them. I'm going to stop my outfit-based wittering now and wish you all a lovely weekend, see you on the other side!

      Me-Made-June '11: Days 4, 5 & 6

      So, let's do this!:

      Day 4, AKA 'Self-Stitched-Skirt-Saturday', (daytime):

Plus, the world's pastiest legs! It was sooooper hot on Saturday, so I was able to reach for one of my standard outfits from my Barcelona days. This cotton blouse is really fine and not at all clingy, so great for sticky days.

      Day 4, AKA 'Self-Stitched-Skirt-Saturday', (evening):

Poker and cocktails night!!!!!!!!!! It's tricky trying to figure out what to wear when you are just staying in your own flat for the evening, but want to rock a femme-card shark kind of look. How much is too much?! I've got my ganster shoes on that I picked up at a charity shop for £5, and seeing as they are too high to actually walk anywhere in, this was kind of the perfect evening to rock them!

I felt really good in this outfit, because I think it's a pretty good reflection of my style as it currently stands: kind of kitschy-glam with a vintage flavour. Actually, looking at the pics again, it's not as kitschy or glam as I'm capable of, but considering the other players rocked up in jeans or shorts and T-shirts (except for my boy, Patty, who rocked a ludicrous black and gold vintage western shirt, gawd bless 'im!) I felt the most flashy in the room!

      Day 5:

Despite what you may have expected, I wasn't as hungover as you'd think on Day 5. I'm rocking a comfy top and jam-jams because it was raining and I had no plans to go outside, considering I'd been so busy the day before preparing food and drinks, cleaning and tidying the flat, hanging paintings and buying lamps. That leopard top really was worth the making. It's very versatile. During Winter, I rock it with a vest underneath and cardi over the top, but now it's a little warmer, it acts like a lightly more flattering sweatshirt.

      Day 6:

      • Bustier T-shirt
      • Grey wool dress (recently fixed coz I'd made a rubbish job of the back slit and a belt loop broke)
      • Refashioned cardi
      • Pants
Today was a throroughly miserable day. I wish I could have stayed at home again in my jam-jams, so grey and chilly. Anyways, this dress turned out to be a major investment in effort. I'm going to make some more wool dresses for next Autumn if the fabric surfaces.

If you are playing with this challenge, how are you getting on so far? Any notable observations or revelations?!

      Me-Made-June '11: Days 1, 2 & 3

Hi peops! Here we go, time to start the documentation of my outfits for Me-Made-June '11, or as my boss has decided it should be called: Making-More-of-an-effort-June.

      Day 1:

      • Beignet skirt
      • stripey long-sleeved T-shirt
      • Saint cardigan
      • pants
      • coat
This outfit was pretty comfy and it felt good to be rocking a more vibrant look than I probably would have scraped together!

      Day 2:

      • high-waisted shorts
      • stripey boat neck T-shirt
      • pants
      • coat to and from work
      • refashioned green cardi when it was chilly
You know me, I'm not the kind of lady to avoid a challenge. I'm the kind that invents the challenges, no?! That's the kind of thought process I was trying to adopt when I realised in the morning of Day 2 that it was going to be sunny and warm enough to put on some of my shorts and fulfill half of my self-inflicted short-wearing challenge. I wore them with my most opaque (opaquest?) tights and my leopard coat which covers my bum on the way to work. But actually during the day I felt really comfortable in them. When I caught a glimpse of myself in them, they made me smile, and the didn't really feel much different from wearing a really short skirt. By the end of the day when it was really warm, I felt confident enough to walk home without wearing my bum-covering coat! In public! I think I'm converted. Though I don't think I would have felt as ok as I did if I hadn't had the opaque tights on. Maybe flesh tights or no tights are the next frontier I need to cross? Watch this space...

      Day 3

      • black sailor trousers
      • mustard jersey top
      • swallow detail 50's jacket
      • pants
After two days of having my belly squished wearing tights, I wanted to rock a pair of trousers. Day 3, I took the opportunity to wear my black sailor trousers with my new mustard jersey top, a well-worn favourite garment with newbie on its maiden voyage. The slinky quality of the fabric felt lovely, particularly as it turned into a really warm day. I would have felt more comfortable if it was 3-4cms longer. As my boss suggested, I could add a contrast band of something to the hem, but I don't think that would look very good, but I think it'll work really well tucked into my high-waisted black Jenny skirt, though I will still try it out with the massive flower mini skirt that I initially hoped it would work with.

I love this jacket though. I made this ages ago, even before I started this blog in fact. It's made from cotton mix sateen, though somehow it's got really soft so it can be used as a kind of cardi rather than strictly in a jacket-sense

Here's one more pic as I take on the flickr group's mini-challenge of spinning for our documentation photo. I think the point was to wear a full skirt to make a lovely twirling shape, but I wasn't going to let my lack of full-skirts prevent me rising to a challenge!

      Me-Made-June '11: Inventory and Aims

Here we are, on the very cusp of my fifth me-made/self-stitched challenge: Me-Made-June '11! I'm excited to see what all the other particpants are going to be rocking this time round, both the returnees and the newcomers. I love to see different peoples' personalities coming through in what they wear, and I really think it's more visable with garments that have been self-stitched. Because that individual was involved in lots of decisions along the way, rather than just whether or not they want to buy the garments, there's so much more creative involvement, even if the project wasn't something the sewer really invested much in.

Anyways, I just completed something that I didn't do for Self-Stitched September or Me-Made-March '11: a me-made clothing inventory. Although it wasn't a conscious decision to avoid doing so, I don't think I bothered in September because I was fresh my clothing cull. Looking at my depleated ranks of garments compared to my Me-Made-May's inventory, in which I found a lot of pride, would have been a bit depressing. And March was just cold. My aim was just to get through the month without wearing the exact same outfit (that outfit consisting of most my clothes all layered up) each day.

But over the last few months I've been steadily beavering away at the sewing machine, churning out garments whilst motivated purely by whim rather than identifying holes in my wardrobe. I thought it'd be interesting to see how things are shaping up. With a high percentage currently in the laundry and not possessing sufficient hangers, I decided not to physically collate my me-mades, like I did back in April '10. Instead, I can offer some stats:

      • 4 pairs of trousers
      • 7 skirts
      • 3 shorts
      • 6 blouses/woven tops
      • 7 t-shirts/jersey tops
      • 6 me-made or refashioned sweatshirts/knitwear
      • 5 dresses
      • 3 coats/jackets
      • 3 vests (for layering under my outfits during the day or as part of my sleepy-time wear)
      • enough pants (undies) if I keep up with the laundry
      • 2 pyjama bottoms
      • 2 jersey tops for sleeping in

So there we have it. It sounds like a decent amount, but I'm not sure if it's all particularly mix and match-able, in terms of silhouette, style or colour. Looking at my stock in the flesh, I can see some gaps already, but I'll see how I get on. It's going to be a learning curve for sure, which of course is the whole point of these shenanigans!

Aside from my pledge to wear both pairs of high-waisted shorts this month in the hope that I will begin to feel comfortable in them, what other aims do I have for MMJune '11? Well, I feel I ought to get some wear from my expanding range of dresses and skirts, or just stop frikkin' making them! I'd like to come up with some new combos of garments rather than relying on my tried and tested set patterns. Plus, identifying those gaps, as previously mentioned, and hopefully filling a couple of them up by sewing some things during the month. And after my free time analysis/revelation yesterday, I really should aim to spend more time blogging this month, as those documentation posts tend to push the other stuff I like to write about here out the way a bit.

If you are participating in this challenge(or even if you are not!), what are your aims for June? I wish you all a very happy and enlightening month! xxx

      Thoughts on Shorts

Ok, so I was harbouring a minor obsession with high-waisted shorts for the majority of last year, but didn’t have a clue where to begin crafting my own. I bought a couple of vintage trouser patterns which I thought might offer an avenue from which to begin, but I don't think I was entirely sure where I was going with it, so they lay dormant along with the plan in general. Thentowards the end of the year I snared my job making clothes for Traidremade, which has kind of engendered in me a more ‘can-do’ attitude and speed of attack. I voiced my love of the high-waisted shorts genre to my boss who directed me to get on with making a pattern for some already. Plus she furnished me with the final piece of the puzzle: a high waisted skirt pattern.

So the desired pattern got made and I have since made approximately 12 squillion variations of the first batch for our range. I was encouraged to make a pair for myself when I made that first batch, which I documented here, but then Winter hit hard and they never got worn beyond that little photo shoot. When it started to get warmer in April, I decided it was finally time to venture outside in my shorts. In that first shorts post, I voiced a concern with not knowing what to pair them with. Well, I cobbled together this outfit (pictured above and below) for their virgin mission. Not the greatest outfit I've ever rocked, but it worked well enough.

How did I feel? Pretty naked! I liked the supportive feeling round my belly, but I didn't take off my long coat because I felt everyone would be able to see my bum! I took them off as soon as I got home! FAIL.

Well, never one to put a little issue like unwearability between myself and a project, I decided to knock myself up another pair in soft denim. This pair is an inch or so lower at the waist and plainer with no added detailing, thinking this would make the whole concept of wearing high-waisted shorts more paletable. Result: the same. I've worn this pair once. For maybe two hours.

As I posted recently, I've made a very similar pair for my friend Harriet who wasted (nice pun, no?!) no time rocking her pair to various events. The lovely Scruffybadger commented that she wish she was braver to wear such things (although she totally could and I have no-doubt she would look amazing!). However, I can relate to her sentiment!

What's wrong with me?! When I look at these pictures, I think both pairs, especially the denim ones, look pretty good. No-one can see my arse and they aren't nearly as revealing as some stuff some girls wear about town when there is the tiniest hint of sunshine. Is 31 too old to rock short-shorts? My gutt reaction is 'hell no'. Funnily enough, when I lived in Spain I had little-to-no problem rocking my navy and red Ruby shorts. Maybe these new pairs are shorter? maybe it's the way they emphasise my figure more and demand the top to be tucked in rather than hanging looser over my belly area? AGH!!! My brain is mental.

So, I'm setting myself a little challenge to make sure I wear both these pairs of shorts at least once during Me-Made-June '11. Please nag me to keep up with this! I'm going to wear each pair for a whole day or a whole evening out, no matter how uncomfortable I feel to see if that's the nudge I need to get into these (literally!). Do you have any thoughts on shorts?

      Announcing: MMJune '11 Brighton Meetup!!!

Howdy peops!!! How are you doing? Exciting news: as I write this, about 100 amazing creative individuals across the globe have signed up to take part in Me-Made-June '11!!!! How incredible is that?! Can you imagine what that would look like if we all met up in Real Life in one room? Well, there is of course the MMJune '11 Flickr group where we can all hang. But sadly, the science of getting is all together in the flesh is beyond me. But I am hoping to bring such a meeting into fruition in a tiny way. Enter: The Me-Made-June '11 Brighton meetup on Saturday 25th June 2011!

Sorry all peops that live outside the UK (or somewhere within the UK which happens to be prohibitively distanced from the South East), I really wish attending was an option for everyone. Maybe you could arrange a meetup where you live if you feel there might be others in your 'hood that might be up for hanging. If you do decide to arrange one yourself, let me know the deets and I'll post about it.

Anyways, please note, the MMJune '11 Brighton meetup isn't just for people who have signed up to the challenge, anyone who is into (or would like to get into) sewing clothes is welcome. The one stipulation though if you aren't already participating in the challenge but would like to come along too, if you own a garment you've made yourself, wear it to the meetup!

The meetup will entail meeting at Brighton train station at a to-be-arranged time, then (in no specific order) going for coffee and a natter, checking out the cream of Brighton's haberdashers and fabric purveyors, snooping around a flea market and street market, having a bite of lunch and maybe a wee G&T if time permits. PLUS, if that wasn't enough to lure you down here, Tilly (who I've been convo-ing with about this meetup) has flagged up that she is feeling a bit guilty about the size of her stash, so ingeniously suggested that we add a little voluntary stash bustin'/ fabric swapping element to this meetup. As y'all know, I'm a total advocate of raiding your stash and sourcing second hand textiles for sewing projects rather than buying new fabric where possible. You may also recall my attempts to encourage giving away and swapping unwanted stash items. In short, this suggestion of Tilly's is so up my street, I'm sometimes asked to feed its cat when it's on holiday.

I've got a fair idea of how to organise a stash swap, so if you wish to attend this meetup and happen to have some pieces of fabric that you really can't see yourself using, why not bring them along? Remember, one man's poison is another man's medicine!!! This is, of course, an entirely voluntary section of the meetup, you are in no way obliged to bring any of your beloved fabric with you if you don't want to!

So, if you are free that day and would like to come and hang out by the seaside, leave a comment with your email address or a link where I can easily find your email address, and I'll contact you a little closer to the time to arrange the details. Looking forward to (hopefully) seeing you!

      Me-Made-June '11 Flickr Group!!!

As promised, the Me-Made-June '11 Flickr group lives!!! So, if you have signed yourself up as a participant of this challenge and wish to document your outfits photographically and share them with the class, then head on over to Flickr group and request membership and you'll be a member within a day or two (though probably sooner).

Remember, you can still sign up as a participant of MMJune '11 and join the party. Involvement and contribution to the Flickr group is completely optional. On the flip side, if you don't want to participate in this challenge, you are still perfectly able and more than welcome to check out the Flickr group photo pool and discussions and soak up the inspiration, though you will not be able to actively contribute to them.

Here's some further pointers and guidelines for potential members of this group:

      • Please be aware that the images posted to this group's pool and discussions that take place can be viewed by the public, but can only be added to by those who are members of this group.

      • This group is for participants of the challenge to post images of their outfits/garments that were worn during June '11. Please do not use this Flickr group to display your creations, unless THEY WERE ACTUALLY WORN IN JUNE '11.

      • If members do not feel comfortable appearing in photos on a public forum such as this, they are more than welcome to choose an alternative way to display and represent the outfit/garments/accessories worn during this challenge.

      • Please limit your photo uploads to 2 images per day of June.

      • It is in no way compulsory to upload photos everyday, or even to particpate in this Flickr group at all. Participants are welcome to contribute photos to this group as often or infrequently as they like. If participants don't wish to document every day of the challenge, that is totally fine.
If you have unanswered queries or concerns regarding the MMJune '11 Flickr group, or the challenge in general, feel free to leave a comment or message me through Flickr or my blog email address (at the top right of this page). Hope to see you over there!
